What is News Rover?
News Rover is the ultimate tool for extracting information from Usenet newsgroups. News Rover automates the process of searching for messages, downloading them, decoding file attachments, and reconstructing files that are split across multiple messages. News Rover does all of this automatically while you are at work, sleeping, or browsing the net. When you are ready to read messages and look at the pictures it has collected, they are ready for instant access on your computer. News Rover does the work, so you don't have to waste time waiting for messages to be downloaded and decoded.

News Rover allows you to specify Include and Exclude expressions that control which messages are collected. These expressions can be elaborate and can include and, or, not and near operators and parentheses. By using an Exclude expression, you can easily exclude many spam messages. In addition, you can exclude messages that are cross-posted to more than a specified number of newsgroups.

News Rover will save you time and greatly increase your effective utilization of the Internet.

How would like to have a tool ...
  • which would find messages across a set of newsgroups which contained keywords, possibly combined with and, or, not, and near?
  • which would automatically download and decode new picture files (.jpg, .gif, .mpg, etc.) from a set of newsgroups and then allow you to click on a button to see a screen with thumbnail images of those pictures?
  • that automatically dials your ISP and let you collect the messages you want in the middle of the night, while you sleep, or during the day when you're at work?
  • which would automatically collect multi-part file attachments, perhaps posted over days or even weeks, assemble them in the correct order, create a single file from them, and allow you to automatically launch the appropriate application to view or process them?
  • that makes it easy to post Usenet messages and send e-mail? How would you like to be able to forward messages and/or file attachments to other newsgroups or send them to friends via e-mail?
  • that eliminates many spam messages and prevents you from seeing duplicate cross-posted copies of messages?
  • that could scan multiple news servers, combine and thread messages from different servers, and combine pieces of multi-part file attachments that are found on multiple servers?
  • that makes it easy to post private messages to Usenet newsgroups and send private messages through anonymous remailers?

... now you can have this tool.

News Rover is just this tool. It will search through Usenet newsgroups for you and extract only those messages which meet criteria that you establish. It can process Mime, Base64 and UU-encoding to convert attached files, even multi-part files, to their binary formats. It can be scheduled to run whenever it is convenient for you, and it can automatically dial your ISP before it starts its run and hangs up the phone when it's done. (This feature is only available in the Windows 95/98 version.)
